February Plan

So, January (after Midwinter), I:

  • Tracked food.
  • Walked 10k a day.
  • Drank a whole butt load of water.
  • Ate healthy

In February, I plan to:

  • Continue January Goals.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Go to Planet Fitness 3 times a week for cardio and will increase times when I get comfortable with three.
  • Go to Crossfit once – three times a week with Mike.
    • However many times Mike does not go to CF, I’ll supplement weight training at PF.

Exciting news, too. My friend Leia, my very best girl, has been wanting to get in shape for some time. Crossfit was too much heavy lifting, yoga was expensive, and so on. I proposed Planet Fitness to her and she is all about it. So, I have a workout partner! Which is pretty exciting.

I called PF to see if I can come in tonight, late, when Mike goes to bed. They said absolutely as they are staffed 24-7. I am pretty excited that I will be able to go whenever I want.

I am feeling really motivated right now. I know that if I can’t go to Crossfit, I have a 24-7 gym at my disposal. No excuses.

Monday Recap

So, Week 3 of this new plan is going strong.

I did:

  • Do floor workouts every day.
  • Complete my 10,000 steps daily (except weekends)
  • Drink more water.
  • Eat healthier

I did not:

  • Quit Smoking

I made it pretty far, going strong. I tried to quit on Lady Time. If you’re trying to quit smoking, do not under any circumstances, try to do it on your time of the month. Hormones are high and awful and I ended up crashing so hard emotionally that I went right back into it. New plan? Quitting next week.

Mike and I are going to Crossfit today after a big ol’ hiatus. I usually get anxious going back because people ask you where you have been, what you have been doing, and the like. I know that once I get through that one hurdle of today, it’ll be fine.

I am half tempted to join another gym (like a small fee one, like Planet) to just get in some cardio for the week because our Crossfit’s hours are super wonky as they’re closed for several hours during the day and sometimes aren’t open by the time Mike gets out of work. It’ll give me the chance to go later if Mike can’t make it home in time.

Now, currently reading Planet Fitness, they’re open 24 hours a day. So, yes, I will be talking to Mike about this. Cheap fee, too! Inspired by my Crossfit Mermaid who is doing the same. I would do all weight training at Crossfit and then do cardio daily at Planet.

I want to spend every day doing more cardio work and then flip back to Crossfit for weight training. You can be at two gyms, right? That’s not weird or anything?

Thanks for sticking with me on this ride, friend. You all are really amazing support here and on Instagram. I hope you reach your goals this week!

Are you in a ditch, Meredith? Y/N

  • First and second week of January were dedicated to prepping for a huge convention in Milwaukee. We had a lot of things thrown at us (including, but not limited to – three of our staff members getting wicked sick) so it took me for quite the loop.
  • We have had visitors for three weekends in a row so constant cleaning.
  • Being a god damn activist. So, we are going to get a little political – so, hold onto your seats. After the election results, my entire heart and mind were confused, lost, and angry. So, I did what I learned I needed to do. Between throwing donations at Planned Parenthood and ACLU, calling my representatives every single day, I ran around collecting letters for marginalized friends, volunteering, creating artwork for #makeartnotwar, and making sure my marginalized friends feel as safe as I can make them every single day, and fighting fascism on the internet.
  • Feeling a little down? Anxiety, maybe? I have been completely sluggish (probably due to bad eating and lack of exercise) so we are gonna try this all over again.

Where does that leave our heroine?

Well, I talked to a health-nut friend of mine and I explained that I was hustling hard, eating healthy, and then December hit and I went downhill super quickly. I kept trying but I would slip.

She said, “You’re trying to do too much at once.”

And I always thought doing too much at once was a good thing. You get more done. When it comes to health? You can’t do this. People try to juggle 300 things from nothing and they end up failing because it’s too much. So, slow rolling back into routine and I’ll kick it up each month.

So, I am going to do resolutions/goals by month and not this long string of hopes and dreams that I can’t accomplish in a short period of time. So, revising my list for January, starting tomorrow:

  • 10k on my FitBit every single day, not just weekdays. This is pretty easy to accomplish.
  • Water intake has got to go back to a gallon. I have a nifty water bottle from Lesley and I just got to use it more.
  • Watching what I eat and recording it. Actually having meals and not skipping two to be starving at dinner.
  • Floor exercises in the morning and evening.
  • If I make it to Crossfit this month, great. If I don’t – I have to do an at home WOD.
  • Go back to accountability on Instagram.
  • Get 6-8 hours of sleep (This is the hardest thing to do but I am going to try)

Baby steps to get back into routine.

I gotta applaud Nicia who has fallen into a similar boat with me. It’s nice when you can read something and go, “You know what? Yeah. I feel you.” And it’s that level of closeness and understanding of sharing similar situations and knowing that you got each other to lean on. I know I can do this. I know Nicia can do this. I know we’re gonna kick ass together this year and I am really glad the internet brought us together. She’s rad AF.

Tomorrow, we start.

2016: Year in Review

Well, it’s almost the New Year.

This year has been up and down and back again. I was pretty consistent with diet and workout up until last month where it turned sporadic.

We have a new team member that I needed to train and now, he’s off for a week so I am juggling two jobs. Late hours have happened but it ends this weekend.

I did, however, complete one major goal.

That major goal was doing a box jump. This seems SUPER easy to do but my brain would not allow me to even breathe near a box. This was huge for me.

I did go to Crossfit three-four times a week up until last month.

I went over 200# on my backsquat.

I went over 275# on my deadlift.

I had some challenging weeks with Coach Carl. He’s off the map again so I am on my own. This time, I am not waiting around for him. I love and respect my Coach but the distance of two states seems to be almost impossible. I think I was in my mind that I would reach my goal this year but I waited and I can’t do that to myself.

Eating healthy is becoming second nature for Mike and I. It was a challenge, don’t get me wrong but finally he likes healthy stuff and we had a nice long talk yesterday. Now that Mike is a brewer, he works out every single day and asking to do Crossfit is a daunting task. Since I am at my desk all day, I don’t get this luxury. But, after explaining how important it is to me, he understands that he has to go with me. I love support systems. They work well.

I picked up smoking again (I know, I know) but gonna try again after Midwinter. I told Mike I would quit before and he laughed and laughed. That convention is the most stressful one next to GenCon. So, Tuesday after Midwinter, I am gonna try again. For those who have done this, it’s not easy. I just gotta pull the trigger and stick with it.

So, now onto 2017.

  • Run a mile, unbroken.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Crossfit at least three times a week.
  • Keep up with my FitBit steps.
  • If I miss Crossfit, I will do an at home WOD, no questions.
  • Switch from beer to red wine.
  • Continue eating healthy.
  • Pay more attention to form.
  • Do an assisted pull-up. Another head game of mine. I know I can do it but my body is not having it.
  • Do the Rennisance Diet after Midwinter.
  • Check in and record my progress.
  • Use a measuring tape for real and throw out the scale.

Rewards for completion:

  • New wardrobe.
  • Scrub cleaning the bathroom of smoke stains and re painting it.
  • Teeth whitening.
  • New workout gear.
  • A rower.

What are your resolutions? I believe in you. I know we can do this together.

New Week: New Me

First and foremost, MAD LOVE to my Crossfit Mermaid as she is all sunshine in my Instagram feed! Also, thought of her today, even! She’s my Crossfitspiration on the regular and I am so happy for her!

We are on Day #2 at Crossfit.

  • Mike has been more than lax on going for two weeks so we are changing that. It’s super important for relationships to support one another. I cannot stress that enough. When your SO eats unhealthy, it’s harder to eat healthy. When they don’t work out, you’ll find more excuses. He promised to help me hustle. Mike also hustles at a brewery all day and he’s losing weight fast so it’s harder for him to go to Crossfit after a day of deadlifting barrels. But, we are sticking with it.
  • Coach Carl is off the map again so I am by myself. I am less disappointed this time, though. He gave me the right tools so I just got to use them.
  • Monday was Cindy. Today was a ladder workout of 10-1 Clean and Jerks and 1-10 Barbell Push-ups. Seems fast, yeah? You’re doing 45 reps total and let me tell you that last Clean and Jerk was brutal. But, I did it.
  • Katy was there today, which was nice. My swolesister. She’s got a new schedule with waitressing but we got together and chatted a bit.
  • Diet is back to easy. Once I get over Monday, the rest of the week is a piece of cake. We had chicken and peppers yesterday and then tortilla soup today.
  • Speaking of diet the only real challenge is forcing myself to eat. I struggle at weight loss due to two factors. One, I eat like once a day. Two, I drink. One is an easy fix as I have set reminders for myself. Two, is gonna go away for a month in December so I can really see how much it impacts me (Spoiler: I know the answer).
  • My plan is to go Renaissance Diet after Midwinter. I have to train myself to eat five meals a day, eat more protein, and workout five days a week. So, it’s getting comfortable with those things before pulling the trigger.
  • Breakfast (thanks to Lesley) is now Epic Bars which are literal meat bars. They’re so fucking good, y’all. Packed with Protein. Grass fed. Paleo. Obsessed.
  • I got Mike Thug Kitchen’s newest book which is awesome. I love them because they’re vegetarian and healthy but you can easily toss some protein in there.
  • FitBit is still rockin’ though yesterday after Crossfit when I hit sync, it erased all of my friggin’ steps for the day. My IPhone knows I did it, at least. Doesn’t mean it won’t stop me.
  • On the emotional side of things, this election hit me in the gut last week. I skipped gym time to be with my marginalized friends and support them and I ain’t even mad about it, to be totally honest with you.
  • Anxiety is more under control. I lash out less. I am coming to terms with a lot of things. I am letting go. It’s a process but I am getting where I need to be.

Good is not a thing you are, it’s a thing you do.

Get out there and vote, y’all! Tomorrow is the last day!

Onto fitness!

So, I have been doing the small meals every day and that seems to be going pretty well! Yesterday, however, I made the largest mistake.

We were out of food. This never ever happens. It was 12 midnight. We caved and got fast food. And mind you, not good fast food. McDonald’s. Which we gave up for seven years but it was the only thing open. Even with a grilled chicken salad, it still made me violently ill.

After being sick all morning, we vowed to never do that again. Never again have bare cabinets or just go to bed starving because why in the hell did we think this was a good idea.

I have had nothing to eat today because I am so sick from that. But, good news with gaining back my appetite. Mike is making green beans and pumpkin wheat ravioli tonight with a killer kale salad.

After we do the WOD. It doesn’t look terrible but y’all know how this goes. The easy looking ones are the literal worst.

This month at work, we have to have a coworker make a “morning workout routine” for us. I got Pauline, a yoga instructor. So she designed me a morning salutation workout. I am very excited to do it!

December, I am giving up alcohol. I want to see how drastic it affects my weight loss (I already know this answer).

I am still training for Savage Race. Now with it being colder out, I gotta grab my cardio off the rower.

FitBit continues to go well. My sister is getting way more competitive and my friends are, too! It’s a good time every week.

And that’s about it for today, y’all.

Lesley Drop-In

Fairy Swolemate!

So, Lesley was in for a work conference which ended up with giving her some free time. We went to the box together 🙂

We did Back Squats (in which she called me on my form – which was awesome), Push Presses, and then we did Annie. I am getting way better at jump roping. I would not say that I am at double unders but I feel way more comfortable and I am not tripping over myself every five or so.

At one point, I did 50 – unbreakable. I remember first doing jump rope and I was like,

“One. FUCK. One. Shit.” Now to do it unbroken for a bit is awesome.

Then, she made turkey burgers with jalapeños and onions and sweet potato fries and salad. It was delicious.

We talked Renaissance Diet. This will be a thing after Midwinter in January (it’s a 12 month commitment and doing it during the holidays is going to end up in arguments with family). But, some things I learned about it.

Eating More: Five meals sometimes six a day. Challenge: I get my breakfast, sometimes my lunch, and definitely dinner. I am going to train myself to start doing small five – six meals a day.

Training more: I need to start committing to five days a week at the box. Not three or four and a walk every day. I am gonna up my attendance.

Side bonus: Our box is getting MOTHER EFFIN ASSAULT BIKES AND I AM SO EXCITED.

Calorie Counting is still a thing. I need to be better about MyFitnessPal. I eat so routinely that I got it in my head but since Renaissance is so very different for food allowance, I gotta train back in.

I am looking forward to it.

This week is Crossfit tomorrow and Wednesday and most likely Thursday. And of course, our ridiculously competitive FitBit Challenge in which my sister gets hilariously angry at people who pass her.

Also, Happy Halloween, y’all! I hope it’s safe and that you have a wonderful time!
